Patrick Henry had one of the best runs in a few years at the Willie Jones Junior City Championships. Tournament named for a Lincoln Wrestler who was committed to Cornel but died graduation night from a stray bullet is the San Diego Conference annual tournament were nearly all 18 conference schools compete.
Patrick Henry had four finalists including senior Reid Muscat 167lb, juniors Ethan Vinoray (128lb) and Abdullah Alshami 122lb and a freshman Caleb Arenz (177lb)
This was Ethan Vinoray’s second time on the podium, taking 1st in his freshman year. For Abdullah Alshami and Reid Muscat it was first time making it on the podium, a culmination of two and three years of hard work respectively.
Caleb Arenz took 2nd as a freshman, in large part thanks to Jiu Jitsu background and two years in the Middle School Wrestling program created by the San Diego Unified Middle School Athletics.
Biggest surprise of the night was Eli Roy who wrestled in his first Varsity tournament and pinned all of his opponents except the champion, taking 3rd place.
Other notable performances was freshman and Middle School Athletics graduate Maverick Garcia (127lb) who placed 4th and first year wrestler junior Zakariah Safi (288lb). Alejandro Rodriguez won two matches as a first year wrestler in his first varsity tournament. He was JV but bumped to Varsity as a result of a varsity wrestler not being able to wrestle that day.
Overall coaches are proud of the team performance and look forward to even better results next year.
Next week girls wrestle in CIFs at Rancho Bernardo HS and JV wrestle at Mt Carmel in the JV Counties.
