Patrick Henry qualified two girls and eight boys to Masters this year. Wrestling is unique to other sports in that it has one tournament that combines all divisions into one. So the CIF Masters Wrestling Champion is not one of four champions in San Diego, they are THE Champion for San Diego. This is a grueling two day tournament with some wrestlers going as many as ten matches in the two days. To qualify for this tournament, wrestlers must quailfy by placing in their Division.
This year Patrick Henry had a record of six boys and two girls qualify. For boys Patrick Henry had it’s second CIF champion in four years, Ethan Vinoray placed first in his fourth tournament this year. Freshmen Ayden Ventura placed 5th and William Soares placed 8th. Senior Abdullah Alshami and Junior Nicholas Arambula both placed 6th, putting all qualifiers as top 32 in San Diego.
On the girls side two girls for Patrick Henry wrestled at Division 1 Championships. Girls wrestling continued to expand this year, adding another Division. Junior Aubrey Lund placed for her third time, placing 4th and Sophomore Maverick Garcia placed 6th, putting both as top 16 wrestlers in San Diego County.
At Masters boys wrestled well. Abdullah Alshami lost against Oceanside Isaiah Rosales, putting him at top 12 in San Diego County. Senior Ethan Vinoray placed for the second time, losing to fourth and third place wrestlers in close matches. He ultimately placed 6th and was ranked 13th in the country. At Masters Ethan scored his 100th and 101st career varsity wins. This put him as only the second wrestler in Patrick Henry history to have over 100 varsity wins, a rare occurrence for any wrestler.
For girls, both Aubrey and Maverick entered the tournament as unseeded. Both wrestled and beat opponents who previously beat them. Aubrey and Maverick both lost their matches to the third place winners, making both top 6 in San Diego County. Aubrey after the tournament was ranked as top 20 in California.
The success for our Masters qualifiers is impossible with the great support from their team, coaches, family and administration. We are proud of their success and we look forward to seeing growth for them and their teammates next year.
Go Patriots!
