Nine Patriots came to the 31st City Championships known as the Willie Jones Jr Memorial and wrestled against 16 other teams in the conference. Last year Patrick Henry tied for 4th and it was first time since 2017 that Patrick Henry was not in top 3.
This year Patrick Henry was coming in with three top ranked wrestlers and nine out of 14 weight classes, three of them freshmen.
Freshmen fought hard as did other second year wrestlers. Francisco Saroldi-Gonzalez and Reid Muscat, both second year wrestlers came in a match away from placing with three wins each. Barrett Talbot a junior and third year wrestler lost his third place match by a fall after leading most of the match and placed fourth. Aedyn Jamison was leading in semi-final and was caught by Madison. He came back to pin his next two rivals for third place.
Big wins came from Junior Alex Adler (132lb) who was in finals for a second time in his career, losing by just a few points to UC.
The two champions of the night were the Vinoray brothers. Freshman Ethan Vinoray at 113lb had his third match against Mira Mesa Phong Tran, increasing his win count to 2-1 over Tran after a flurry of a match. Elijah Vinoray, a 220lb senior, scored his second first-place at the tournament after taking first in 2021. His win was over Canyon Hills state ranked wrestler, his second over the wrestler this year.
Great performance from Patrick Henry. Next weekend freshman will compete at the Freshman counties and varsity will go the following week at Division 1 CIF.
